A sawn-off shotgun has been used to rob a Christchurch tavern overnight.
Detective Andrew Owens said a man armed with a firearm described as a sawn-off shotgun entered the Harewood Tavern just before midnight on Wednesday.
“The offender made off with a sum of money and left on foot,” Owens said.
Two staff members were working at the time.
Owens said while the event was traumatic for them, “thankfully no one was injured”.
Eleven police units, including officers with a police dog, responded to the incident.
The offender, described as Maori of athletic build, is yet to be caught. He was wearing dark clothing and his face was covered at the time.
